Ahmet Adnan Saygun composed Inci’s Book: Seven Pieces for the Piano, Op.10, in 1934. The composer has dedicated this work to Mrs. Eugène Borrel, his harmony and counterpoint teacher in “Schola Cantorum” in France.
The seven easy pieces in this work- “Inci, Playful Kitten, A Tale, The Giant Puppet, A Joke, Lullaby and Dream” reflect the Turkish folk and traditional music. Inci’s Book has been published by the “Jorj. D. Papajorjiu” in İstanbul and “Southern Music Publishing Co. Inc.” in the United States of America.
In 1976, Halit Refiğ, a famous Turkish movie director, wanted to make a documentary about the composer. We have learned from the conversations between the two that Inci’s Book was the the first published work of Saygun in abroad in 1951. In addition, this book was one of the recommended books by the American Music Teachers Association for piano teachers at that time. Saygun told Refiğ;
“…I have learned from a letter, sent from New York, that my music was recommended. After a while, I have received another letter from a college instructor. He wrote in his letter that his students have really enjoyed my compositions a lot, but they couldn’t find any information about me. I have written a letter to him giving some information about myself as I was asked to. After a while, I got another letter from the same person. He wrote that ‘from your letter we have got the impression that you were Christian. Are you really a Christian?’ I guess, he believed that no Muslim could do such thing. This kind of thing is the worst part of the job… (Yedig, 2011, p. 42)
Inci’s Book has an important place in the Turkish piano music repertoire. Since this book has not been published for a long time in Turkey, the music has been fotocopied by the piano teachers and students. This invaluable book has been republished by the Music Education Publishing Co. as a contrubition to Turkish music repertoire.
